Oconee River Retrievers specializes in training retrievers and flushing dogs for Hunting and Hunt Test Competition. We also take young Field Trail Dogs for our Basics program in preparation for Derby and to lay a good foundation for more advanced training. We are also taking dogs for basic obedience. Our full-service retriever training facility is located in Williamson, Ga.

 

Retriever Training

• Basic Training - Minimum of 4 - 6 months to teach your dog the basic commands and skills needed to get your dog hunting in the field or running Junior Hunt Tests. This includes force fetch, basic obedience, collar conditioning, and expose to guns and boats. Singles on land and water and introduction to multiple guns in the field.
• Transition Training - Building on the skills allready taught in the basic's program focuses on teaching the dog handling, lining, and marking skills needed to compete at the Senior Hunt Test level and be a finished hunting retriever. Average time is 6 months to 1 year.
• Advanced Training - Concentrates on advanced double and triple marks on land and water, difficult blind retrieve concepts and Master Hunt Test scenarios. Length of time varies according to each dogs individual needs.

Upland Training

• Teaches dogs to quarter and flush birds within range of the gun and to be steady to wing and shot. We also work on a reliable retrieve to hand. Average length of time is 3-6 months.

Basic Obedience

• In basic obedience we focus on teaching your dog to be a happy and obedient family companion. Your dog will know sit, heel, here. down, no jump, and learn to be an all around good dog. We can also fix many problems not listed here at your request. Average length of time is 2 weeks to 1 month.

Force Fetch

• Force Fetch or The Trained Retrieve teaches your dog to pick up birds or objects on command. This program usually takes 2 weeks to 1 month to complete and will ensure reliable hand delivery of downed game. It will also help to prevent or cure any mouthing problems.
